about

On November 30th 2013, Barbados' 47th Independence Anniversary, I conceived a manifestation of Burning Desire with the release of 'One sonic divided into Three' which came to be known as 'Austere'. The Kadeem Ward Project was born.

The roots of this band emenated from pure self-exploration through improvisation. There was no intended 'direction' other than self mastery through psychedelic overtones. The influential elements which became the driving forces behind the band varied tremendously, although throughout the band's 8 year existence, 4 artists reminded consistent: David Gilmour, the late Fela Kuti, the late Jimi Hendrix & ultimately the late Selim Lemouchi.

Gilmour: The Floydian who inspired me to depart into the sea of Blues licks, such a departure was visualised on 'Confection'.

Kuti: Pushing the boundaries for the average durations within the history of 'Barbadian Music' came through this Nigerian Spirit; a true son of the East & his conception of 'African Classical Music'. 'Dilemma' housed 'The Project's' longest studio recordings featuring nearly 3 hours of both bass & electric guitar improvisations.

Hendrix: A seed sowed before the manifestation of 'The Project', but would not come to prominence until 2020's 'Formulas', where the technical aspects of his genius where highlighted. Some elements of 'Confection' & the demos that followed after mustered sensibilities from Jimi both sonically & lyrically.

Lemouchi: Mr. Don't Give A Damn. I would've been privileged enough to have brief conversations with him before his passing, the first I would have from one of my major musical influences. His musical expressions are based primarily around the concept of freedom & liberation, both sonically & lyrically. It was only natural that the formula of 'The Project' be based around this concept as well. Selim was a master at creating unique soundscapes, textures & atmospheres, many of which influenced the experimental aspects of my band. Selim's last project: 'Selim Lemouchi & His Enemies', was the primary influence behind the branding of one of 'The Project's' few subsidiaries, 'Kadeem Ward & His Mechanical Devices', which bared the concept of 'Mechanical Philosophy', one that saw the universe as a mechanism that can be altered & controlled.

Here, the journey of 'The Project' has been broken down to 3 sections. Each track has been selected based on successful technical standards, ones that would have a potentially strong commercial appeal, or simply improvisational favourites that served my metaphysical journey well.

Disc I (1 - 7): The sonically appealing selections.
Disc II (8 - 15): The sonics conceived at the apex of creative & expressive freedom.
Disc III (16 - 21): The nomadic journey: Expressions & Intonations of the Shamanic self.

Today, Barbados not only celebrates 55 years of Independence, but is also reborn as a Republic. In my eyes, this is a true moment of liberation and I strongly syncretize the energy of Independence with 'The Project'. I hope to continue to do so for as many years as possible.

Come, bask in the sunlight of an 8 year old expression & its microcosmic spheres which are the result of collided worlds, a never-ending curiosity for the union of possibilities & a correlation of an energetic coalescence mustered by an interdimensional quest for levitation & ascension.
